What to Wear to a Sangeet
Shimmer, swirl and dance all night: what to wear to a sangeet as a guest or family member, with colours, fabrics, outfit ideas and tips for dancing in comfort.
Updated 2 Nov 2026
The sangeet is the night of music and dance: family performances, a DJ, and dancing until late. It is usually an evening function, often the most glamorous one before the wedding day. You want an outfit that catches the light, looks good on stage and in photos, and still lets you move.
The colours
Evening light and stage lights flatter jewel tones and deep shades: wine, emerald, royal blue, purple and black. Metallic and sequinned pieces come alive under disco lights. Pastels with heavy sequin or mirror work also stand out well. If the family has set a colour theme for the night, follow it.
The fabrics
- Georgette: flows and swirls when you dance, and doesn't crease. The easiest choice for a long night.
- Tissue and sequinned fabrics: shimmer under the lights without needing much jewellery.
- Chinon: a soft sheen and a little more weight, so it falls nicely in photos.
Heavy silks and stiff fabrics look grand but get hot and tiring after a few hours of dancing.
What to wear
A sequin lehenga
The classic sangeet look. A flared lehenga twirls beautifully on the dance floor, and sequins do the work of jewellery. A black lehenga with multicolour sequins is one of the most striking choices for a night function. See our lehenga sets.
A draped or corset lehenga
For a more modern look, a draped dupatta or a corset-style blouse feels fresh and photographs well, and there is less dupatta to manage while dancing.
A co-ord set
If you are performing, a draped co-ord set gives you freedom of movement with a festive, cocktail-party feel. See our co-ord sets.
An embellished Anarkali or party gown
A floor-length Anarkali or a party wear gown flares when you spin and needs very little styling. See our party outfits.
If you are performing
- Do a test dance at home in the outfit, with the shoes you will wear.
- Check the length. A lehenga or gown that just touches the floor in heels can catch under your feet in flats.
- Pin your dupatta at the shoulder and the waist, or drape it once across the body.
- Choose a comfortable neckline and sleeves so you can raise your arms.
Accessories
- Statement earrings with a simple neckline, or a choker with a deep one; not both.
- Block heels or embellished juttis. Stilettos and long nights on a dance floor don't mix.
- A small potli bag for your phone and lipstick.
